Muhlenberg Greene Architects, Ltd. is a full service architectural firm recently celebrating 100 years in the Berks County area. MG Architects has built a very strong presence in the City of Reading and the surrounding area over the past centry in practice. BLUE CENTER FOR MUHLENBERG SCHOOL DISTRICT | MUHLENBERG, PENNSYLVANIA
The Blue Center Building of the Muhlenberg School District Campus in Reading, Pennsylvania was an original building of the campus that had undergone extensive renovations. Before the building was renovated in 2017, it was exclusively a storage building for many years. This building was the last stand-alone building of the original campus that had not been renovated into an adjacent expansion or repurposed. The Blue Center was originally a one-story double loaded corridor of classrooms for the junior or senior students. Much of the classroom elements of this building were still intact before demolition. The Blue Center was to be repurposed for administration offices for the Special Education Department and the Information Technology Department. The Blue Center also features a large Multimedia/Multipurpose Room where the School District can hold gatherings of different sizes and purposes. The remaining part of the building was reserved for the Maintenance Department offices and storage. Most of the interior of the original building was demolished; the exterior brick shell and the steel structure remained. This allowed for a completely new arrangement of interior spaces.
My involvement in the project had been extensive. This project had originated from the master plan of the school campus. Initially, the School District was unsure of what to do with the Blue Center. The master plan had started discussions to demolish or repurpose the building. I started schematic design with sketching office spaces for various school district departments and configuring the spaces into the existing building footprint. After meeting with some school officials and reviewing the sketches, it was determined that the School District wanted to centralize the Information Technology Department as the department had been scattered throughout the campus. This would allow the I.T. Department to function from one main space. Another department selected by the School District to place in the Blue Center would be the Special Education Department. At the time, the Special Education Department was located in an old residence on the school campus. The building did not meet any accessibility requirements and offices were crammed on three floors of the home. Moving the Special Education Depratment into the Blue Center would allow for a better office arrangement meeting accessiblilty requirements. It would also be more welcoming for the visitors of that department. Finally, the superintendant requested that the Blue Center would feature a large Multimedia/Multipurpose room to hold teacher workshops, training, parent teacher meetings, and school board meetings.
With these requests, I worked on the project from design development through construction. I participated in the construction administration as the assistant project manager. I had the opportunity to be on site for construction observation and weekly job meetings as well as reviewed submittals and request for information documents. The construction was complete by the Sping of 2018.
MSD Baseball concession and field house | muhlenberg, pENNSYLVANIA
The Muhlenburg School District Baseball Concession and Field House was part of the Athletic Fields and Stadium Improvement project. The building was all new building construction and cosmetic alterations to the dug-out structures, and fence. The Baseball Field House would provide a concession stand and single user toilet rooms on the first floor with a pressbox/team meeting room on the second floor. The floor below grade provided a space to store field maintenance equipment. The existing dug-out structures received split-faced block finish to the exterior facades that matched the materials of the Field House and new roofing, while the existing fencing received new black paint.
The design for the Baseball Concession Stand and Field House was complete years before I joined the MG Architects team. The project was designed and documented ten years earlier when the School District decided to put a hold on the project. My role in the project was to review the documents to ensure they were compliant with the current building codes. The current building codes required small revisions to the documents. From there, I was involved with the project from permitting to the completion of construction.
